A new framework for a post-convergence world

Beyond Synthesis

Legitimacy, Leverage, and the New Physics of Global Order

History did not end. Synthesis did. A book for navigators — not resolvers — of a world that will not stop going wrong.

By Buford Ray Conley

The World Has Stopped Converging

For three decades, the West operated on an assumption rarely stated and almost never examined: that the world's contradictions would resolve. Liberalism would spread. Markets would integrate. The dialectic would complete itself.

It has not. It will not.

What emerged instead is what this book calls stacking — the persistence of incompatible logics, the coupling of systems that resist harmonization, the permanent condition of tension without resolution. Not one crisis with side effects, but multiple crises that interact, amplify, and resist the categories we built to contain them.

Beyond Synthesis begins where the old frameworks end. It introduces an instrument built not for prediction, but for orientation — for anyone who suspects the old operating system has crashed and nobody has admitted it yet.

The Framework

The Compass

Five forces that appear whenever systems flip between stability and crisis. The Compass does not predict. It orients.

L

Legitimacy

Who gets to decide — and why anyone listens. The permission structures that hold institutions together or tear them apart.

Li

Liquidity

The plumbing of power. Capital flows, clearinghouses, and the financial infrastructure that can be weaponized overnight.

Lo

Logistics

Supply chains, energy grids, shipping lanes — the physical substrate on which everything else depends.

Le

Lethality

The capacity to destroy, deter, or coerce. From drones to sanctions, the expanding frontier of organized force.

Ln

Learning

How systems adapt — or fail to. AI, institutional memory, narrative warfare, and the race to update faster than the environment shifts.

“Its couplings show where stress propagates. Its modes reveal the system's preferred failure shapes. Its damping framework turns observation into intervention.”

About the Author

Buford Ray Conley

Buford Ray Conley began his career building satellites at Hughes Aircraft and solving rocket propulsion problems at MIT, where he earned degrees in aerospace engineering with a concentration in economics. After McKinsey & Company, he spent three decades in venture capital and private equity before founding Creekstone Capital. He now leads Creekstone Energy, developing one of the largest AI data center campuses in the world.

A CFA® charterholder and NASA Space Grant Fellow, Conley brings a systems-engineering lens to questions most authors approach through ideology or history.
